Name: Sarah Peart

Character in Big Ballet: Swan, lady-in-waiting and a gallery girl

Sarah started dancing when she was 4 years old. After finding that ballet was not for her, Sarah progressed to Tap and Modern classes at age 6. Sarah then went on to be a British champion baton twirler specializing in military marching and dance twirl and a regional champion in synchronized swimming.

Sarah gave up dancing when she was 15 years old and didn't go back until taking part in the Big Ballet series. Sarah took part in the series to prove that it was possible to train as a ballet dancer at any age and physique. She discovered that she loved the fitness levels and degree of discipline that ballet requires. Although continuing to take part in as many classes as she is able to, Sarah focused her efforts into working in the community and championing ballet as a fun way to keep fit and changing art form in her city.

Sarah is a working artist, interested in drawing, installations and performance art. Sarah would love to have the chance of working with sets and costumes and would be interested to perform again.

Name: Melissa Jayne Wong

Character In Big Ballet: Pink Princess, a black cygnet and a swan

Curious about movement and dance from a very young age, Melissa is an accomplished Dance Artist with a background in Classical Ballet, contemporary dance, Yoga, Somatic practices and Martial Arts. Deeply interested in the use of breathwork, mindful physical awareness and classical aesthetics, Melissa is currently creating an engaging and emotive performance company in the North of England.

A featured participant in Channel Four’s Big Ballet, Melissa was praised by mentor Wayne Sleep for being a great all-rounder. During the recital at St Georges’ Hall, Bradford, she played the roles of Pink Princess and a Black Cygnet.

Since completing the series, Melissa has been cast alongside dancers from Phoenix Dance Theatre in the upcoming BBC Drama series ‘Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell’, and in 2014 was offered an apprenticeship with the emerging Navdhara India Dance Theatre company in Mumbai. In addition to developing her company, Melissa is currently engaged as an apprentice Classical Pilates teacher at Breathe Pilates Ltd in Sheffield.

In August 2014 Melissa appeared on BBC Radio Sheffield to talk about her world record attempt of 1,265 grand battements (ballet kicks). Although successful the record unfortunately remains unverified due to the incompetency of the organisation trusted to record it. Visit her blog for further info.

In her spare time, Melissa runs an online dance magazine – www.dancemuse.org - which although still in its early stages has featured interviews with Northern Ballet principal Tobias Batley, Hanover Choreography prize-winner Kenneth Tindall and Chantry Dance Company.

Name: Christine Longster

Character In Big Ballet: Swan / Neopolitan

Christines first Ballet class was at 4 in Newcastle, at Mrs Conways. Her first stage début was head of the pixies. This was the start of something that would inspire her and be her passion for life. At 8 Years old, Christine went to Isobel Dunn School of Dance, in York. She appeared on ITV Junior Showtime. She was chosen by Faith Worth (Royal Ballet) to be Fairy Moonbeam in Sleeping Beauty (York Theatre Royal), Swanhilda in Coppelia, and Odettte in Swan Lake.

At 13 she attended Bush Davies Theatre School, Sussex. From there at age 16, she was chosen to attend The Royal Ballet Upper School. Her dance training was unfortunately cut short, having to leave through illness. Her dream of dancing ballet was over, for the next 30 years.

She devoted herself to fitness, when it all began in the 80s. She started with aerobics, teaching in many top health clubs all over Yorkshire. She has taught all styles of fitness and danced based classes, which she still does, to this present day. Spreading her passion for making dance fun for all . She compares it to putting on a show.

During the early 80s she got the chance to play the part of Mini Faye in Hello Dolly (York Theatre Royal) ,and appeared on Every Second Counts (a popular TV show of the time).

Her last début, to date, was appearing on the Big Ballet series, with Wayne Sleep and Monica Loughman. The program gave her great closure on having to leave ballet ant the pinnacle of her training and was a life time experience she will never forget. She loved dancing the Neopolitian, a solo and a Swan in Swan Lake. It was as if she had never been away from Ballet. Following the program, Christine appeared on Calendar (ITV), The One Show (BBC One), This Morning (ITV), and gave interviews to magazines and papers, including the USA Self Magazine and the Wall St Journal. Since then, Christine has been invited to take part in a chat show on Radio BBC York, on various subjects, many times, including a regular slot, throughout Strictly Come Dancing.

Christine is concentrating on her fitness career and still takes part in Ballet classes as a pass time. She would welcome any offers of parts in productions, or projects which combine Ballet and fitness or speaking on the radio.
